What is MUN?

What is MUN?

MUN is short for Model United Nations and is more of a concept than a distinct programme. While it has nothing to do with fashion modelling, MUN conferences traditionally-speaking simulate debate of the different organs of the UN. Today, a lot of Model UN conferences also simulate regional organisations such as the European Union, Organisation of South American States and the Arabic League, to name a few. Most conferences are organised by school or student associations, so anyone who wants to can organise a Model UN conference.

Participants take on the role of a representative of a country that is not their own. They debate issues from the perspective of their adoptive country and work together with other delegates to create resolutions that can be adopted by the committee.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MUN?

MUN is a great way to learn about global issues in a more interactive way. It is also a unique manner in which to practice debating and public speaking. For non native English speakers, it is an excellant opportunity to practice speaking English. At the same time, it allows participants to meet people from different background from all around the globe.

SHOULD I DO MUN?

If you are interested in international politics and relations, debate and meeting people from all around the world, then MUN is for you!

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED WITH MUN?

Check out your university to see if they have a MUN or UN association and see if they organise their own conferences or participate in other conferences. If not, you can always apply to conferences as an individual delegate.
